SIYABONGA MAVATA

Siyabonga Mavata eats his breakfast at his house in Grahamstown. Siyabonga, or Siya as he is known to most, is a 22-year-old Rhodes University student from Port Elizabeth. He enjoys electronics, and spends the money that he earns from working on investments such as the latest gadgets.

Siya is studying a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Economics. He is currently in his fourth and final year at Rhodes University. He works in the library on his Micro Economics work.

Aphelele, Zimkitha and Asanda watch as their brothers and sisters play with a soccer ball. The children at Home of Joy look forward to Siya’s regular visits. Siya’s mother has always said that Siya should open a daycare centre, as he is very good with children. He aims to get a job in Johannesburg next year, but Home of Joy will always be a special part of his life, and for the children, Siya will be cherished as having had a positive impact on their lives.

Siyabonga Mavata is a Rhodes student who began volunteering at Home of Joy at the beginning of 2012, and has become very close to Mama Margaret and the children. This photo essay takes a look at his life.
